tinny: Rae Earl (My Mad Fat Diary) (mmfd_rae)
[personal profile] tinny posting in [community profile] icontalking
By popular request, there are going to be icon challenges in this community. Since I don't like the word "battle", and there is really nothing competitive about them, I'm going to call them "activities".

These activities will work like this:

* I make a post with all the information you need
* You have three weeks to make icons and post them in a comment to the information post (not screened)
* I collect all the icons (and whatever you have to say about them) from the comments and make a result post
* There is no voting
* Everyone can leave comments on the inspiration and activity summary posts

My current plan is to run one such activity per month, but we'll see how it goes and if you even like what I come up with.

But now, on to our first activity! What better way to get to know each other than by showing each other what fandoms we like:

For this activity, you should make five icons. You have until May 20th (end of day) to submit your icons as comments to this post.

1 - First Love

Icon your first fandom! This can be any fandom that you remember as a "first" - the first one you ever saw, or the first one you ever got fannish about, the first one you ever iconned, or the one that first connected you with other fans.

2 - Current Obsession

Icon the fandom that currently excites you most! It doesn't have to be a current fandom in that it has to be new or currently airing. It just has to be the fandom you want to icon most right now!

3 - Biggest Fandom

Icon the fandom that for you was the biggest fandom. We all know those popular fandoms everyone is iconning, there are thousands of fics, and even years later, activity is still high. If you have never been part of one of those huge fandoms, it can be the one you made the most icons of in your life, or the one for which you know the most fans.

4 - Tiny Fandom

Icon the fandom that you feel like nobody has seen but more people should have! Make an icon that makes us want to watch it! Show us what we missed.

5 - True Love

Icon the fandom that has stuck with you the longest. The one you will love forever, no matter what canon throws (or threw) at you. If you have no such fandom - because all fandoms inevitably dissappoint you ;) - you can choose to interpret this "love" theme to be about a favorite couple instead: icon a pairing you love.

Some notes:

* It is okay to enter fewer than five icons (but the final results post will look nicer if every slot is filled :)).
* Please submit your icons (icons and URLs) to this post, all in one comment (if possible).
* You don't have to icon five different fandoms. If your first fandom happens to be a tiny fandom and your true love, no problem!
* Everyone can participate, you don't have to be a member of this community.
* For each icon, please add at least the name of the fandom to your comment.
* Feel free to tell us more about what you like about the fandom, or what makes it special for you, in your submission!

1. anne of green gables — l.m. montgomery; thus began my relationship with Important Fictional Redheads.

2. longmire; it's all katee sackhoff's fault. vic moretti must be protected at all costs.

3. star trek: voyager; (maybe not voyager itself, but i'm taking liberties and saying it counts as part of the trek universe as a whole, heh.) kathryn janeway ruined my life. also i really love kes.

4. north and south — elizabeth gaskell; restrained victorian desire and social commentary: double-barrelled weakness. (i cheated with this one as i used the same style and text on an icon in a different fandom a while ago.)

5. pride and prejudice — jane austen; no matter how many times i read it, it never disappoints. (this one was the most difficult because i don't particularly like any of the adaptations. the illustration is from the marvel comic by sonny liew.)

I had no idea that Pride and Prejudice had a comic version. I love it!

That's a shame. What a lost opportunity to introduce young readers to Austen. I loved the Classics Illustrated comics when I was a kid.

Do you like any of the other illustrated editions? I found another one for kids by Usborne and one from the Folio Society when I was looking for your illustration. You took the cover, cropped it, and added the text? It turned out very well.

There are a lot of P&P illustrators at Deviantart, too. Who knew?

I love the style and quote you used for North and South.

i like the hugh thomson illustrations (see icon); the brock ones are also nice. i haven't seen any other illustrated editions, so i don't know what else is around.

there's a lot of austen fanart, and most of it's p&p. some of it's really very good.

thank you. :) i'm happy with how that one turned out.
